Honey Salmon

Salmon salmon salmon. How do you pronounce salmon? Is it sal-mon or sa-mon? I know the Americans will say sa-mon and most Malaysians will argue that it's sal-mon.... I like to call it sa-mon!

Anyway, I love love love raw salmon. I'd be a happy girl just having a few slices of raw salmon with steamed fluffy white rice and a drizzle of wasabi mixed soy sauce for lunch and dinner everyday for my entire life :) But unfortunately, raw salmon is too expensive to be eaten everyday. It is a luxury, only to be enjoyed when a special occasion arises.

So the next best thing would be salmon block. A block/slice of salmon sells for RM12+, enough to feed 2 adults and a child. I like to include salmon in our diet at least 2 times a week. Salmon is known for its omega 3 fatty acids and is one of the best protein foods you can eat!

Some people I know cannot tolerate the smell and taste of cooked salmon. I can't understand why. There is no smell at all, unless the fish is not fresh to begin with. I especially love the fatty parts. Yum mmy! Here's one real simple way to cook a block of salmon.

Bought this cook book at mph recently. Already tried out 4 recipes from here. All turned out very well. Delicious too. Costs only RM7. If you like fish and don't know how else to prepare the fish, get this book. But be warned that the end results are mostly spicy.. Malay style lah.

Ok, so page 39 of the cookbook will bring you to "Salmon Madu" (Honey Salmon). Only 3 ingredients (boy I love 3 ingredients recipes):

100gm salmon (I used one block, don't know how much it weighs)
2 TBSP honey (I used 1.5 TBSP )
1/2 TBSP light soy sauce ( I used 1 TBSP)
1/2 TBSP black pepper (just a sprinkle coz sunny boy can't take too spicy. FYI black pepper IS spicy for young ones)

You must get the freshest salmon for this. Smell it. If you don't smell a thing, then it's fresh :)

Just mix the honey and soy sauce with the salmon. Make sure the salmon is fully coated with the mixture. Then leave it in the fridge to marinade for at least an hour. I had mine marinated for 3 hours.

Remove the salmon from the fridge half an hour before steaming, so that it comes to room temperature. Steam over rapidly boiling water for 8 minutes. Test doneness by poking a fork into the meatiest part. Should be flaky. Do not overcook the salmon. Or else the meat will be tough and chewy.

Done! Sprinkle some black pepper before serving.

The taste is simple. Don't expect it to be salty or sweet. Just natural flavour from the salmon with a hint of saltsweetish from the sauce. I liked it and so did sunny boy. Try it and let me know what you think.
